Threat Reduction
This is serious work, and TMC is on the front lines of the global effort to reduce the threat posed by the stockpiles of armaments and weapons facilities left behind when the Soviet Union collapsed. Working with the Department of Defense, the Department of Energy, and other U.S. Government agencies, we have been instrumental in efforts to:
• Dismantle ballistic missile silos in Ukraine
• Destroy solid rocket motors in Russia
• Safely store fissile materials in Russia
• Clean up a former chemical warfare plant in Uzbekistan
• Clean up a former biological warfare plant in Kazakhstan
Our work in Nukus, Uzbekistan, is a good example of what we do. Working with the U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), TMC acted as program manager on a complex effor to demilitarize a former Soviet chemical weapons plant in the remote western desert of Uzbekistan. We oversaw a project team selected for its technical expertise, and we provided the logistical, support, and government relations services needed to sustain the program. We ensured coordination with the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defense, and local construction contractors, and we provided needed materials, including housing, food and water, to workers at the site.
